How To Name Your Image Files

One of my photographer clients asked me about best practices for naming image files for her clients. Having been responsible for naming and filing images as a photo editor, art buyer and digital asset manager for 20 years, I have a lot to say about it!

Example file names:

Client_project_descriptor_imagenumber.jpg

i.e. loreal_holographic_512coolamethyst_0011.jpg (commercial client)

or photographer_client_date_imagenumber.jpg

i.e. avc_smithfamilyportrait_030920_0011.jpg (personal client)

Don’t forget your file info:

File naming is very subjective, and these are habits that I have picked up through the course of my career. Let me know if you have any questions.
