Now that we have conquered the ask, it’s time to ask again.

Ugh, what?!

Yep.

Ever hear of the rule of seven? It’s an old marketing adage that suggests that a potential client or customer needs to see your message at least seven times before they take action and buy from you.

With photography and illustration marketing, you will rarely catch the right person at the right time. But if your marketing is memorable and you keep in touch, you may eventually be remembered for a great assignment.

Do you feel like you give up after one no? Is your soul crushed a little bit? Deflated, confidence punched in the gut? I can certainly relate.

A good way to get over those feelings of rejection (or the deafening sound of crickets) is to practice hearing no until it doesn’t deter you quite as much. Or so I learned from Jia Jiang who practiced his own 100 Days of Rejection. He calls it Rejection Therapy. You can watch his TED talk here.

The more I read about famous creatives and entrepreneurs, the more I learn about the massive number of times most people hear no before they get the YES. (Did you know Chicken Soup for The Soul was rejected 144 times before it was published? It then went on to sell over 500 Million copies…)

So keep going. Persist.
